MNG Steel forges and heat-treats steel grinding media for SAG and ball mills. Every heat is tested for hardness profile, impact toughness and breakage before it leaves the plant, so concentrators can replace imported media without changing their grinding performance.

Which media does your circuit need?
Choose the mill and we show the size range, alloy and hardness we recommend as a starting point. Final selection follows your ore, liner design and a marked-ball trial.
Large-diameter mills need deep hardening and high impact toughness; breakage under 0.5 % in the drop-ball test.
Consistent hardness profile heat after heat keeps the charge stable and the wear rate predictable.
Small media with high volumetric hardness; hot-rolled balls from 2027 for high volumes.
Chromium carbides give low wear in abrasive, low-impact circuits.
What we make
Concentrators qualify grinding media on hardness profile, impact toughness, breakage and, above all, wear in their own mill. Our laboratory runs every test the site specifications ask for, on every heat.

Quality
From bar to mill in seven controlled steps

Bar stock
Hot-rolled round bar from qualified mills. Every heat is analysed on the spectrometer before release.

Induction heating
Bars are heated to forging temperature in seconds with temperature logged per batch.

Forging and rolling
Hammer and die forging for large balls; skew rolling for high volumes. Dies checked for size and roundness.

Quenching
Controlled quench sets the hardened case. Temperature and medium recorded for every batch.

Tempering
A continuous furnace relieves stress and fixes the hardness profile from surface to core.

Testing
Hardness profile, Charpy impact, drop-ball and metallography on samples from each heat.

Packing and delivery
One-tonne bags or drums labelled by heat number, delivered to the mine on a monthly schedule.

About
A Mongolian plant, audited like a global supplier
MNG Steel was founded in 2017 to produce steel grinding balls in Mongolia for the country’s copper, gold and iron-ore concentrators. The plant began with cast and forged balls for smaller mills and now supplies heat-treated forged media to large SAG and ball mill circuits.

Expansion 2026 – 2028
From 12,000 to 40,000 tonnes a year.
A three-phase programme takes the plant from 12,000 to 40,000 tonnes a year, adds an automated rolling and heat-treatment line with induction heating, and brings production and testing into full compliance with the latest media specifications of Oyu Tolgoi and Erdenet.
